"San Pietro Shadows," by Steven Sheffield
Come with us as we study art abroad at
"La Romita" in the Umbrian region of central Italy. La Romita is a renovated sixteenth century Capuchin monastery surrounded by olive groves in the foothills of the Apennine mountains.

For two weeks our classes will be held in
La Romita’s frescoed chapel along with day trips to the various scenic hill towns that dot the region. Experience the sweeping vistas, exquisite food, and warm hospitality that
La Romita has to offer.
La Romita will confirm the date for our 2013 trip in August of this year. We're hoping to get a September, 2013 date. We'll let you know as soon as we find out.
Illustrated Journaling
We'll be recording our daily experiences via the process of illustrative journaling. If you want to know more about it, click here. We'll sketch, paint with watercolor and capture images with our cameras. Any skill level is welcome!
Our step by step instruction will be presented in a logical, practical manner, along with large doses of encouragement. We'll help you to maintain your individual expression as you experiment with new techniques and styles. Class time will be structured, yet open enough to accommodate the artistic spirit within us all! Painting days will consist of both plein air and studio painting.

Instructors

Steven K. Sheffield has a B.A. from BYU and a Master's Degree from Utah State University. "My art is continually changing; distinctly different in style, it is all based in abstract design; landscape or non-representational." He works on synthetic paper, treated panels, as well as canvas. "I let the creative process lead me, often using multiple mediums in one piece." Steve uses enthusiastic vigor while teaching; enjoying the camaraderie it brings with his fellow artists. He has exhibited in numerous shows, receiving many awards, including 4 "Best of Shows." He is a signature member, and past chairman of the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, and is a lifetime-honorary member and past president of the Utah Watercolor Society.

Susan N. Jarvis attended the University of Utah and has studied with Alvin Gittins, Doug Braithwaite and John Hughes. She has received many awards for her oil and watercolor paintings. She is a member of the Utah Watercolor Society and the Intermountain Society of Artists. She is a past president of the ISA. She likes to capture the movement of everyday people doing everyday things. "I look for moments in nature when the lighting is unusual. I also enjoy the challenge of painting a common scene in an unusual way. Although I dabble in watercolor (especially when I travel), I prefer using oils. Figurative works are my favorite but I can’t resist plein-air painting and the occasional still life.
